 Picture is from a CT DEEP Outdoor Show in 2016 teaching flint and steel fire starting. 
Participants first learned the skill of making sparks, then making a birds like nest.
Those skills were then applied into making a fire using char cloth and their birds nest.
Lighted birds nest were placed into a fire pit where participants learned to slowly feed the fire producing a larger flame and eventually burning kindling wood and then cooking some char cloth in a round tin with a small hole in the top.
